Channel and Slope Lining

This project involved the construction of channels with side slopes exceeding 80°, a condition that posed high complexity for traditional solutions due to uncontrolle concrete consumption and execution difficulties.

Given this scenario, the use of geocells was selected, enabling significantly faster progress compared to conventional steel reinforcement assembly. Uniform shotcrete placement was achieved, reducing construction time and optimizing overall efficiency in a technically demanding environment.

In response to projected increases in river flow, authorities, project managers, contractors, and suppliers promoted the execution of riverbank protection works to control erosion, protect bridge abutments, and mitigate flood risks in vulnerable areas.

Geocells filled with crushed stone were employed, an innovative solution specifically designed to withstand high drag velocities. This technology was implemented in longitudinal dikes, the most affected by previous hydrometeorological events, ensuring greater structural stability under extreme conditions.

In response to the threat posed by the El Niño phenomenon and the potential overflows of the Zarumilla River, the Autoridad para la Reconstrucción con Cambios, in coordination with the executing contractor, continued the construction of riparian defense works along a 11.75 km stretch on the left bank of the river, between the districts of Matapalos and Papayal, in the province of Zarumilla, Tumbes.

The project location was characterized by a severe shortage of rock material, which made a riprap-based solution unfeasible due to the high costs and extended timelines associated with the extraction, processing, and transportation of rock from remote quarries.

In response to these technical and economic challenges, Grupo TDM proposed a more efficient riparian defense system based on the use of geosynthetics, which enabled the lining of 9,987 meters of dikes with geocells combined with concrete, and the protection of an additional 2,010 meters using anti-scour geobags.

This solution not only met the stringent engineering criteria developed over more than six months, but also ensured efficient execution under high quality standards, benefiting more than 2,600 residents, 620 hectares of agricultural land, and significantly strengthening the safety of the entire area against extreme events.

The project in the Corrales ravine formed part of the integrated solution for the Tumbes River, with the objective of directly protecting the residents of the neighborhoods El Triunfo, Buena Vista Baja, Los Ángeles de Corrales, Agel Josué 2012, Barrio Nuevo, and Palmeras, as well as the entire population of the district.

The works began with desilting operations, followed by slope lining using geocells and concrete, applied along key longitudinal dikes critical to the water security of the area.

This intervention proved essential to strengthening the protection of surrounding communities against flood events, making a significant contribution to overall public safety.
